Birthday Bronze – School Games Report by Knowsley Park Media Leaders Leonard Bertamini and Robert Swanwick

De La Salle’s Charlotte Leigh enjoyed some additional attention on her birthday as her team came third in the girls’ Tag Rugby competition.  Charlotte was named Star Player of her team after she tagged, ducked and sprinted around the soaking wet fields of Wavertree Sports Park last Friday.

On a miserably wet July day, a sports competition was in progress.  There was Hockey; Rugby; Rounders; Netball; Tennis and many more, but by far the most exciting competition was the girls’ Tag Rugby.  The players from: De La Salle; Cowley; Maricourt; Range; St. Ambrose Barlow; Wallasey School; Wade Deacon; and finally, Knowsley Park, all persisted through torrential rain to play the sport they love.

By midday De La Salle and Wade Deacon were leading Group A, both with two wins and one draw.  Cowley were ahead in Group B with three wins in three games.  Knowsley Park was close behind Cowley with two wins and one loss.  These four teams went through to the next stage of the competition.  Cowley beat Knowsley in an exciting match which ended 3-2 to Cowley , but Knowsley Park showed fantastic sportsmanship by cheering for their opponents when Cowley beat them.

In the final stage of the competition, Cowley beat De La Salle. They drew their re-match against Knowsley Park but because of their previous result, Cowley went through to the final.  Wade Deacon defeated De La Salle and Knowsley Park to send them selves through to the final.  In the competition for third place, Knowsley Park lost out to De La Salle as Charlotte Leigh pulled a fantastic performance from the bag to help to take the victory.  Nominated star player for Knowsley Park was Mia Morris who also played exceptionally, but not enough to defeat De La Salle.

The final was between Cowley and Wade Deacon, decided in extra time after a brilliant battle left both teams equal with three tries.  Eventually, the overall victors were the team from Wade Deacon, with a notable performance from their star player, Alex Binks.  Cowley went home with a great second place after a superb team effort.  Chloe Billing gave an excellent performance, earning her the title of star player for Cowley.

After a fantastic performance from everyone, victory went to Wade Deacon, concluding the girls’ Tag Rugby in the School Games 2014.
