Mersey Tigers Back Competitive School Sport in Knowsley
Mersey Tiger’s Martin Calvos has backed efforts by schools across Knowsley to improve young people’s experiences of competitive sport.
His comments come as St Laurence’s Catholic Primary and Eastcroft Park Primary schools received recognition for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community via club links.
St Laurence’s Catholic Primary School received top honours with a Gold Kitemark Award, the only Primary School in Merseyside to receive this prestigious award. Eastcroft Park received a Silver award.
Both Schools were invited to play an exhibition match before the Tigers match against Glasgow Rocks which saw Eastcroft win an exciting game by 2 points.
Calvos, who is the Tiger’s leading scorer, said: “It’s really important that young people experience and enjoy the benefits of high quality competition”. Martin was able to see first-hand how schools such as St Laurence’s and Eastcroft Park are revitalising competitive sport.
“I believe that to achieve their full potential in life young people need to experience competition and sport is a great way of enhancing the qualities such as teamwork, discipline, determination and fair play, which will help build their confidence and stand them in great stead throughout their lives.”
Paul Cronin Head Teacher said: “At St Laurence’s we are developing a variety of ways to provide more and improved school sport for our pupils”
