Merseyside Winter Sainsbury School Games 2014

The Winter Festival of the Sainsbury’s School Games in Merseyside consisted of a week of sporting events across Merseyside from 17th – 21st March 2014.

Competitions took place at venues from Woodchurch High School in Wirral to Halton Stadium to Kirkby High School in Knowsley as young people represented their school or borough in Basketball, Netball, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Football and Athletics.

Schools from across Merseyside were able to take part in this county festival which follows a range of intra and inter schools competitions, set up by the Merseyside School Games Organisers. Around 1,600 young people took part in this week of sports events which was put together by the Merseyside School Games Operations Group.

Sporting Champion Lisa Whiteside, 2016 Rio hopeful in Boxing from Preston, was at the event on Friday helping inspire young people to follow their sporting dreams. She said:

“I joined my first boxing club only 5 years ago and have my sights set firmly on competing in Rio 2016. Being part of a club has helped me to grow as an athlete, we all look out for each other.”

“It’s great to see so many young people across Merseyside making the most of the competitive opportunities offered to them through the Sainsbury’s School Games. I hope that all competitors and volunteers learn something new from their School Games experience and go on to be better than they ever were.”

Teams can also be rewarded for demonstrating fair play with a Spirit of the Games trophy. The Spirit of the Games values are: Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief and Team Work.
