New Girl’s Football Competition Launched!

Following on from the success of the Lionesses during the summer, Knowsley School Sport Patnership , Knowsley Council and Volair have teamed up to create the Sylvia Gore Girls World Cup. The competition is open pupils in to year 5 and 6 from all schools in Knowsley. Matches will begin at the end of September with grand finals planned for May.

The competition, named in honour of local sporting legend Sylvia Gore, aims to encourage more girls to take up the game and is being organised with the support of Sylvia’s family.

Sylvia, who was born in Prescot, was an incredible footballing talent at a time when girls were not permitted to play on FA pitches. Despite the challenges she faced, she went on to play all over the world, coached Wales’ national women’s team and was the first woman footballer to score for England in their first ever game! Her sheer determination and talent helped to advance the acceptance and recognition of girl’s and women’s football and her contribution cannot be underestimated. It is so fitting that her legacy will live on with this competition.

Two leagues will be ran, one for schools from Kirkby and Prescot and one for schools from Huyton and Halewood.
